Green Economic Transition Facility

The Green Economic Transition Facility (GETF) is a matching grant fund designed to catalyze green business investments in Malawi. By de-risking and accelerating the growth of green business solutions, the GETF aligns private sector commercial objectives with national development goals to foster sector-wide transformation.

The Context: Why Malawi Needs the GETF

Malawi is dealing with serious environmental and economic problems. The GETF is helping to address these challenges by supporting practical, sustainable projects that improve lives and protect the environment. Below are some of the challenges:

Deforestation

Malawi is losing approximately 33,000 hectares of forest each year,  a rate of deforestation that threatens biodiversity, fuels climate change, and puts pressure on already vulnerable communities.

Land Degradation

Land degradation in Malawi is reducing agricultural productivity by an estimated 6% — directly affecting food security, livelihoods, and economic stability.

Poverty

In Malawi, 71% of the population lives on less than $2.15 a day,  a stark indicator of widespread poverty that limits access to education, healthcare, and basic needs.

Energy Crisis

In Malawi, 98% of household energy relies on unsustainably harvested traditional biomass, contributing to deforestation and indoor air pollution. Meanwhile, only 25.9% of the population has access to electricity (of which 11.3% is grid and 14.6%

off-grid), limiting opportunities for education, healthcare, and economic growth.

How the GETF Responds

The Green Economic Transition Facility (GETF) is a direct and strategic response to Malawi’s urgent environmental and economic challenges. By supporting Malawi's Vision 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the GETF promotes affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy, encourages responsible consumption, and accelerates climate action, all while enabling inclusive green economic growth.

The GETF is designed precisely to break Malawi's  cycle of resource depletion by catalyzing sustainable, market-driven solutions. As a matching grant fund, it empowers the private sector to develop green businesses that directly address these crises, from introducing clean energy technologies to restoring agricultural land and creating sustainable alternatives to deforestation.

By aligning commercial objectives with Malawi's critical development and environmental needs, the GETF provides both the grant funding and technical assistance necessary to pilot and scale innovations that combat land degradation, expand energy access, and build a more resilient and prosperous green economy.
