Gasman
In Malawi, the reliance on firewood and charcoal as the primary cooking and heating fuels is pervasive, with nearly all households (97%) depending on them. Despite the limited development of alternative fuel sources, it is projected that firewood and charcoal will continue to play a significant role in Malawi's energy mix for several decades.
The use of firewood remains prevalent, with approximately 88% of households relying on it for cooking purposes. In urban areas, however, charcoal has become the predominant fuel, with 54% of households utilising it.
Â
The widespread use of firewood and charcoal in Malawi has resulted in severe environmental consequences, particularly deforestation and forest degradation. The high demand for these fuels has put immense pressure on the country's forest resources, leading to the loss of valuable habitats and biodiversity, and the disruption of ecological balance.
Â
In response to this pressing issue and the need for a viable alternative to illegal charcoal, Gasman was established in 2003. Gasman, the biggest distributor of liquefied petroleum gas for Afrox Malawi, recognised the detrimental impact of traditional fuel sources on the environment and aimed to provide a sustainable solution. It has used its vast experience as an LPG distributor to make great progress in adopting clean energy practices.
Â
With over 20 years of operation, Gasman has successfully reached and served more than 20,000 households in and other urban centres across Malawi. Gasman's experience in the LPG industry positions it as a trusted and established player in the market. The company has built a strong reputation based on its adherence to quality standards, customer satisfaction, and environmental stewardship. Gasman's track record of success and its extensive customer base are testament to its commitment to providing clean energy solutions to the Malawian population.
Â
Through its distribution network and efficient supply chain management, Gasman has been instrumental in enabling households to transition away from traditional fuels. By offering LPG as an alternative, Gasman has provided a cleaner and more convenient cooking and heating option, significantly reducing the demand for firewood and charcoal. This shift not only mitigates deforestation and forest degradation but also contributes to improved indoor air quality, reducing the health risks associated with traditional cooking methods.
Â
Gasman's contribution to reducing environmental degradation aligns with Malawi's sustainable development goals. By promoting clean energy practices, Gasman plays a crucial role in preserving the country's natural resources, combating climate change, and promoting a healthier and more sustainable future for Malawians. As Gasman continues to expand its reach and impact, the company remains committed to its core values of clean energy and environmental safety. By offering a viable and accessible alternative to traditional fuels, Gasman aims to transform the energy landscape in Malawi and contribute to the overall well-being and prosperity of the country and its people.
Â
Grant funds obtained under the Green Energy Transition Facility (GETF) will be used for infrastructure development and commissioning of Gasman’s new and spacious operational facility in Chigumula, Blantyre. Among others, Gasman will apply the funds towards the installation and commissioning of two 20-tonne skid tanks; procurement of LPG cylinders and cooker tops for sale; and undertaking a marketing campaign promoting LPG usage.
